How Ancient Medicine Can Work for You

Often considered Eastern medicine, Chinese Medicine is an ancient theory and practice of an amalgamation of different holistic treatments such as Chinese herbs, eastern food energetics, cupping, moxibustion, and gua sha. At Naturna, we consider all these factors when working with a patient, and frequently offer a choice of these treatment modalities. Chinese medicine is rooted in the ancient philosophy of Taoism, dating back more than 2,500 years, built on the clinical experience of skilled doctors over millenia.

Traditional Chinese medicine recognizes two forms of complementary energy that exist in harmony within the universe and the body called yin and yang. The yin is characterized as subtle, passive, soft, and corresponds with night. The yang is characterized by hard, fast, action, and corresponds with day. It is the interaction of these two forms of energy that provide our state of equilibrium or homeostasis, thereby establishing a person’s overall health. If these interactions become imbalanced, disease results and rebalance may require use of one or more of the many Chinese medical techniques. Cupping

This powerful practice from Chinese medicine applies glass or plastic cup-shaped instruments via suction to various areas of the body (mostly the back and neck) in order to mobilize blood flow, detoxify, and improve immunity. Sliding cupping involves the movement of cups over affected areas using an oil for lubrication, giving the sensation of a deep massage. Stationary cupping involves applying the cups to one area and leaving them static for the duration of the treatment. Cupping is an incredible therapy for pain and upper respiratory issues. It can also be used as a form of diagnosis to locate problems in the body

Moxibustion

Drawing upon a traditional Chinese medicine practice, a form of sage called mugwort is burned near various acupoints around the body to stimulate blood flow, improve organ function, and relieve pain. The “moxa” comes in several forms such as sticks or the loose green herb. It is lit with a match or lighter, and held close to the skin or placed on the end of an acupuncture needle. In some cases it may be applied directly to the skin. The patient notices a sensation of warmth and increased circulation in the area during the treatment. Moxibustion can be used alone, or in conjunction with acupuncture to enhance its effects. It is commonly used to enhance fertility, relieve pain, boost immunity and turn breech babies.

Gua Sha

Gua Sha is a traditional Chinese medicine technique that involved short, pressed strokes along the skin with a smooth tool. A bit like massage, this technique helps stimulate blood flow in small areas, and relieves muscle tension in the body as well as common colds and other ailments. This treatment is frequently used on children to help with pediatric issues.

Chinese Herbs

The use of herbs in Chinese medicine is an incredibly old, powerful and respected tradition in the east. The fortifying and healing effects of herbs can be extremely helpful in certain stubborn or chronic conditions. Herbs are not prescribed in every case, but are indicated when Acupuncture does not prove effective on its own. In some cases we can look at herbs as a fuel that helps Acupuncture work best.

Eastern Food Energetics

The tenants of Traditional Chinese Medicine include understanding your body’s energy and how it travels through the body. There are several different types of energies, and when they are disrupted it can impact your whole life. Using these tenants, we can help you modify your diet to include habits and foods that nurture your body’s energies and help influence them to positively impact your health.
