A Few Tips for Making New Year’s Goals Stick

Conflicted about setting New Year’s Resolutions this year? Wondering if it’s worth it? How many times have you set a New Year’s resolution or intention, then by the end of January it has fallen by the wayside?

According to an article in Forbes, only  8% of people keep their New Year’s Resolutions. What is the best way to pick a New Year’s Resolution, and make sure you are part of the 8% enjoying your new habits in 2017?

Here are some tips:

  1. Pick an outcome to strive for that you really care about accomplishing. Something with a concrete end goal that you feel inspired to do. Avoid resolutions that include “should” or “have to.” To execute lasting change, it must come from the heart. During one Tony Robbins interview he was asked about what kinds of “sacrifices” people should make for their success. Tony cut the guy off pretty quickly: “Focusing on ‘sacrifices’ is not what happens if you are following your life mission. When doing what you really love, actions should feel like a ‘mission’ or a ‘purpose.’” A bundle of sacrifices only create resentment and eventually will be unsustainable or bad for your health.
  2. Accountability:  If your goal is tangible like weight loss or a significant income change, quantify it. Ask yourself, why have I not accomplished this goal before? What can I do to make sure this year I really make my resolution happen? If my life depended on successfully conquering my resolution, what would I do? If you want to start getting up earlier, make a commitment that forces you to meet someone early in the morning 5 days a week for approximately 3 months. It will take at least this amount of time to reset your body so it craves this discipline and does it automatically. Once those 3 months have passed, you should miss the activity and how it makes you feel when you skip.
  3. Take back control where you can and let go of the rest. There are often times when obstacles will get in the way of your resolution. There will be off days. Take a moment to forgive yourself and figure out how to get back on track tomorrow. On a day that did not start off right, do things that make you feel more in control.  Schedule tasks based on what is most convenient for you and make some demands of others who always ask from you. Allowing an off day to throw you off track completely is the best way to lose hold of that resolution! Remember even top athletes take a day off sometimes. Strive for 80/20 or 90/10 in order to achieve within reason instead of creating an unsustainable standard.
  4. Revisit your resolutions with a critical eye: What will happen if you do not accomplish your goal? What will your life be like if you push it off indefinitely? Alternately, how will your life be different when you put into practice your objective? What wonderful things will happen to you when you accomplish your resolution for the entire year? Own this positive outcome. Make a vision board of pictures that embody this outcome. Write down the final product of your resolution and post it where you can see it all the time.
