Nutrition and Cancer: Can you “starve” cancer?

Dominant cancer theory is based on genetics: that is why Angelina Jolie had a double mastectomy – she showed positive for a genetic mutation deemed the breast cancer “gene.”  There are also other theories (and case histories of miraculous remission) that beg to differ with cancer as a fatalistic “you were born with it” idea. Different theories (with a base in discoveries as early as the 1930s) are popping up more and more in articles about how we live and what we can do to REVERSE our risk for cancer. The concept that we can turn cancer causing genes on or off and prevent cancer with lifestyle changes continues to pop up in the health media.

One school of thought gaining steam is that of Dr. Otto Heinrich Warburg. Warburg won the Nobel Prize in 1933 and 1941 for his research on cancer. His theory was that cancer happens because the cells are fermenting sugar as a fuel source instead of using oxygen (the preferred option). Specifically, he found that sugar feeds tumors and he hypothesized that to shrink a tumor you should starve it of this very substance. While this fell out of favor and dominant theory continues to point towards genetic mutation, the new research based on this old idea is promising. “Warburg revival has allowed researchers to develop a hypothesis for how the diets that are linked to our obesity and diabetes epidemics — specifically, sugar-heavy diets — may also be driving cells to the Warburg effect and cancer.” It is likely that sugar and cancer may be prevalent theory five to ten years from now.

It is important to remember that most types of cancer develop slowly over the years. More and more research is pointing to the fact that cancer happens because people have been eating poorly and living an unhealthy lifestyle for years and THEN they get cancer. Overall lifestyle (even from a young age) is the most important factor to minimizing cancer risk.

Some nutrition and lifestyle mantras to REVERSE cancer risk:

  • Avoid sugar as much as possible
    • Sweetened beverages
    • Soda (even artificially sweetened)

Detox – Clean Your Liver, Boost Your Thyroid

Last month I spent one of my precious summer weekends sitting in the basement of an underwhelming midtown hotel for 9 hours per day, 3 consecutive days. Why would anyone do that you ask? It was for a seminar by Apex Energetics on the topic of Functional Medicine for the treatment of thyroid disorders. This topic could not be missed! Why is it important and why detox? Thyroid disorders, especially hypothyroidism, are insanely prevalent and will greatly affect your quality of life and long term health. In the short term it could be fatigue, anxiety, weight issues, depression, brain fog, infertility etc. Long term we are looking at more severe mental health issues, heart problems, infertility, birth defects, peripheral neuropathy, goiter and so on. The...

High Cholesterol? Could Be Related To Gluten, Sugar and Carbs.

Do you have high cholesterol and have you been told to ditch your eggs, shrimp and lobster?? What if this wasn’t actually the cause of your cholesterol issues? You may be surprised to learn that gluten, sugar, and carbs are often the sneaky culprits - and also, they are highly addictive! It has been a popular belief for years that eating fat and cholesterol makes you fat and also raises levels of “bad” cholesterol. Now studies point to sugar as the real culprit for heart disease, fat around the midsection, and bad cholesterol. So what does this mean? Eating cholesterol laden foods is not the root of the problem; sugar and refined carbohydrates are often more to blame. Hello, Paleo revolution. Goodbye, sugar and refined...

Cupping nyc therapy

Does Cupping Therapy Work? A Simple Explanation To The Ancient Practice.

Although cupping therapy looks like it leaves a painful bruise, think of it more as the craziest hickey you have every seen! We recently saw it on Michael Phelps and although the marks look painful, they generally are not unless we are trying to break up cellulite or something similar - which can be a bit unpleasant. The process of getting a cupping hickey may not be as fun as the other kind, but it does offer some amazing therapeutic benefits. Cupping is actually one of the best deep-tissue therapies available as it’s thought to affect tissues up to four inches into the skin. The suction created penetrates deeply to draw out stagnant blood and toxins. This allows the body to bring junk to the...

What May Be Causing Low Energy, Weight gain & Skin issues.

Leaky Gut Syndrome is an autoimmune disease associated with your gut leaking toxins into your bloodstream and toxifying your body. This occurs after the gut has been injured by: stress, toxins, over the counter medications, antibiotics, or pathogens like parasites, bacteria, and yeast. It limits your absorption of nutrients and can cause weight gain, skin issues, low energy and even depression. Autoimmunity happens when the body starts attacking its own healthy cells and tissues. The immune system starts overreacting and sends off inflammatory responses. Maybe you have a friend or family member with hashimoto's or rheumatoid arthritis? These are all autoimmune disorders and work in a similar way. Other common examples are: Celiac, Graves Disease, Addison's Disease, Lupus, and Multiple Sclerosis.  “The National Institutes of Health (NIH) estimates that...

Woman Breastfeeding and Nursing child

“Top 20” Tips To Take Stress Out Of Breastfeeding

You've heard it before: breastfeeding is “personal” and “special”. Everyone has an opinion of how it should be done postpartum.  There is a laundry list of breastfeeding benefits. We all know them and want what is best for our baby. Realistically, we live in a modern world. There are many options for those who try as they might, have low milk supply. It isn’t fair that these women are made to feel like there is something “wrong” with them. It is well documented that as early as Ancient Egyptian times, there were women who did not have a good milk supply; in those cases, other women (wet nurses) breastfed those babies. This was the solution until the feeding bottle was introduced in the 19th century–this...

Eliminating Fertility Stress

How many times have you heard someone say “the best thing you can do to get pregnant is to not think about it!” or “just don’t stress out about getting pregnant, that will make things worse”?? And then they start telling you stories about how when they got pregnant they were on their honeymoon or on vacation and totally relaxed. There is truth to stress reduction for fertility, BUT these kinds of stories and statements can be annoying to hear when you are attempting to conceive...

Research on how Acupuncture treats Infertility

The most common question I hear in clinic is: “how does acupuncture work?”. Since acupuncture predates science by thousands of years and is based in Taoist theory involving concepts like “yin, yang, cold, heat, qi” etc.., it has been tricky to explain it from a conventional scientific paradigm. Luckily for all of us, some really smart researchers and clinicians have worked diligently doing study after study to understand the mechanism through which acupuncture works. In several studies, researchers watched areas of the brain light up on scans as needles were inserted into specific points on the body. Very cool! This confirmed that the points were carrying messages to the brain that then relayed back to the body to induce a response (i.e. increase blood flow)....

Eight tips to avoid putting on too much weight during pregnancy

Start your day with protein and/or fat. DO NOT begin with a high glycemic cereal, pastry or bread. Try eggs, a protein smoothie, steelcut oats with flax and walnuts or gluten free toast with avocado and olive oil OR almond/pumpkin/sunflower nut butter. This may indeed set the tone for your entire day as it will prevent you from having a “sugar crash” from the carby/sugary things that absorb into the blood stream too fast. Watch it with the sweets, sugar, and refined carbs. No matter how much you are craving that ice cream sundae, drink a big glass of water (if you have eaten recently already) or try to eat at “real meal” first. Wait 15 minutes and if you are still dying for...

Whats the deal with Gluten free?

Gluten sensitivities pervade our society these days and are contributing to a myriad of health complaints. While some are diagnosed with Celiac disease and know well to avoid foods that contain gluten, there are still many who test negative for the disease yet are still profoundly affected. Most just feel lousy in one way or another and don’t know why. The severity of symptoms range from mild to severe and can often be subtle and insidious in nature. For example: gastrointestinal upset (constipation and/or loose stool), weight gain or inability to lose weight (especially in the abdominal area). Those without any gastrointestinal symptoms tend to notice things like skin blotchiness or irritation, fatigue, allergies and body ache. Its very tricky tracing this back to gluten. The...

What does the pH scale have to do with my hormones?

The body’s pH range is from 0-14 with 0 the most acid and 14 most alkaline. Normally our internal environment should sit at a neutral balance around 7.4. That balance is highly sensitive to lifestyle and food choices: i.e. stress, alcohol, red meat, excess exercise and sugar will tip you much more to the acidic end of the spectrum. Why is this important? An acidic environment can wreak havoc in many aspects of our existence producing symptoms of pain and inflammation, tendency to weight gain or loss, yeast overgrowth, cancer and hormonal irregularities. The proliferation of yeast, bacteria, fungi and viruses in an acidic environment leads to an interference in the enzyme and coenzyme activity involved in hormonal balance. Furthermore, these microbes can feed on hormones leading...

New Beginnings

Over the years I have had the honor of assisting my patients in treating a variety of health challenges. My fertility focus took me from treating women to achieve pregnancy, treating them through their pregnancy, birth and postpartum and along the way treating husbands, friends, babies and children for the things that ailed them. In essence, the family grew, and my practice expanded alongside. My mission throughout has been to bridge the gap between conventional and natural medicine, bringing to patients the best of both worlds. While Geneseed did so in the field of reproductive medicine, I felt that we needed to broaden the scope in order to address the healthcare needs of the entire family. To do so, we are happy to announce our...
